To access, click Recherche thématique in the menu.
Recherche thématique is the easiest way to search for information in a pre-defined set of databases.

1. Optional. A default is pre-selected for you. You can select from one of the ready-made sets prepared by your institution or you can create and select a list of databases for yourself using the MesBasesDeDonnées function in Panier.
   You can click on a set name to display a popup window showing the list of databases that it includes. In this list of databases, you can click to display information about this database, or you can click the database name to go to the database’s Web site.
2. Enter a term in the search box. You can also use the Advanced Search.
3. Click to start the search.
   While MetaLib is searching, the screen is refreshed every few seconds showing its progress in a table listing the databases in which it is searching. This list shows the status of the search and the number of hits found in each database.
   You can click Cancel to stop the search and start again.
   If you do not want the page to be refreshed (for accessibility or other reasons), click the Turn Off Auto Refresh option at the bottom of the page.
   The Status column shows the words Search and link for databases that cannot be shown in the MetaLib Interface. You can click the Jump link to display a database in its native interface.
   Once MetaLib has finished searching, if one or more of the databases can be shown in the MetaLib interface, then the Search Résultats list is displayed. You can browse through this results list, as described in Search Résultats. Depending on how your MetaLib system has been configured for you, the results may be displayed immediately or you may have to click View retrieved.
4. You can now click Search in the menu to do another search.

Note: You can reorder sets created by you via MesBasesDeDonnées.

The Advanced Search provides more options for specifying the information for which you are searching. It is possible to compose complex search expressions using field specific searches and Boolean logic (using the And, Or and Without operators).

1. To access the Advanced Search, click the Advanced tab.
2. Two fields are provided for you to specify the information that you seek.
   Select a field type from the pulldown list on the right of the field.
3. Enter a term in one or both fields.
4. If you filled in both fields, specify the relationship (the Boolean term) between the two fields:
   • Select And to specify that the system should search for records containing the term in the top row and the term in the bottom row.
   • Select Or to specify that the system should search for records containing either the term in the top row or the term in the bottom row.
   • Select Without to specify that the system should search for records containing the term in the top row and not containing the term in the bottom row.
5. Click to start the search.
   While MetaLib is searching, its progress is shown in a table listing the databases in which it is searching. This list shows the status of the search in each database, the number of hits found in each, and the number of records fetched into MetaLib. You can click the Cancel option to stop the search and start again.
6. Once MetaLib has finished searching, it displays the Search Résultats list. You can then browse through this result list.
7. You can now click Search in the menu to do another search.

Recherche thématique Résultats displays the combined results found in all the searched databases that have returned results. It can be displayed in three views: Résultats, Notice abrégée and Notice.

Note: If you have authenticated yourself, you can set your preferred view as part of your preferences.

At the top of the results, you can see the term(s) you searched for and the total number of results found.
The results list includes the first results fetched from all the databases that were searched and returned results.
The results are displayed in the order of their relevance to the term you entered. You can change the order of the results by selecting an option in the Sort by field. Sorting is available by author, title, year, and database name, in addition to the default sort by rank.
You can click the Recherche multibases link in order to see your search results in the Recherche multibases module, where you can view the results per database, refine the search, or save the query for future sessions.
The Summary link enables you to return to the list of resulting databases that was displayed while the Recherche thématique was searching.
The Search & Link Résultats link only appears when some of the databases in the results cannot be displayed in the MetaLib interface. The appearance of this link is an indication that there are more databases that were found than are shown in this window. You can access them by clicking this link and then clicking the Jump link next to the relevant database to view the search results in that database's native interface.

Various options are provided to browse through the results, as follows:

• Click Next or Previous to display another page. You can set the number of results displayed per page as part of your preferences.
• You can jump to the last record using the fast forward arrow >> or to the first record using the fast back << arrow.
• You can sort the results by Title, Author, Year or Database.
• You can navigate the cluster / facet nodes.
• You can view results in Résultats, Notice abrégée or Notice.
• Click Retrieve More to fetch more records to the list that is currently displayed. The list is then resorted according to the relevance of the results, taking the new ones into account. Résultats that are added to the list are marked with a icon to the left in order to indicate which ones you have not yet been shown.

Résultats displays the records in a table, one row for each record. Résultats provides the following options:

• Click the Title or the record sequential number to see the record’s Notice.
• Click the database name to go to the database’s Web site. When possible, the same record is displayed in the database’s native interface.
• Click to save a record in your basket. Your basket is a temporary storage for records that you find interesting. You can later move records from the basket to another eShelf folder, save () records to disk (in various formats) or email () them. Once you added the record to the basket, the icon changes to .
• Click , to use SFX which provides access to a range of relevant electronic resources, such as the full text of articles or holdings information in your library’s OPAC.

Notice abrégée provides citation information, in addition to the information provided in the Résultats. The Notice abrégée provides the following options:

• Click a Title to see the Notice of the record.
• Click the database name to go to the database’s Web site. If possible, the same record is displayed in the database’s native interface.
• Click to save a record in your basket. You can later move records from the basket to an eShelf folder, save () records to disk (in various formats) or email () them. Once you added the record to the basket, the icon changes to .
• Click , to use SFX which provides access to a range of relevant electronic resources, such as the full text of articles or holdings information in your library's OPAC.

Notice shows all the record’s information. It shows a page for each record and highlights the words you queried.

• Click to save a record in your basket. You can later move records from the basket to an eShelf folder, save () records to disk (in various formats) or email () them. Once you added the record to the basket, the icon changes to .
• Click , to use SFX which provides access to a range of relevant electronic resources, such as the full text of articles or holdings information in your library's OPAC.
• Click , to save the record to a file on your PC. A window is displayed in which you can select the format and encoding of the file to be saved. From the Record Format field, select one of the following:

  Standard:

  Saves the file as a standard text file in a format similar to that displayed on the screen.

  MARC21 format:

  Saves the file with MARC21 cataloging tags.

  Citation manager:

  Saves the file in the format of the Citation Manager to which you have access: RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager.

  From the Encoding field, select one of the following:
  • UTF-8
  • ISO 8859-1
  • ASCII
• Click , to email the record. A window is displayed in which you can select the format and encoding of the file to be sent. From the Record Format field, select one of the following:

  Standard:

  Saves the file as a standard text file in a format similar to that displayed on the screen.

  MARC21 format:

  Saves the file with MARC21 cataloging tags.

  From the Encoding field, select one of the following:
  • UTF-8
  • ISO 8859-1
  • ASCII
• Click , to link directly to the full text without going through the SFX menu. This option only appears when available. If more than one link to the full text exists, the SFX menu will be displayed, and the user can choose one of the links to the vendor holding the full text article.
